How to Become an NEMT Broker

When you decide to start a NEMT brokerage, you will need to purchase NEMT billing and dispatch software to make the process easy. These systems will help you keep track of all patient requests, routes, and payment history. A modern NEMT management software will allow you to view all of these records in one place, making the process easy to manage and simplify calculations.

You will also need to network with other people in the industry. This can be done through contact with federal and state agencies, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. These organizations may be looking for new NEMT brokers to help them provide services. Maintain a list of all your contacts so you can reach out to them and make new business.

If you are new to the business, consider attending a training course focused on non-emergency medical transport. These classes will teach you how to understand the NEMT setting and how to effectively negotiate with patients. In addition, they will show you how to properly price and negotiate your services.

As a broker, you will work with a call center to ensure qualified clients are matched with available NEMT services. Once a client has been matched, you will schedule them for the best time possible. You will also keep track of the schedule and current location of all the drivers. You will use this information to accurately determine the costs and timing of each transport. Accurate trip costs and timing are crucial for both the patient and provider.

In order to provide NEMT transportation to Medicaid members, your health plan may contract with a transportation broker or a managed care organization. The broker ensures that only licensed and credentialed NEMT providers transport patients. The broker also manages the provider’s eligibility, trip reporting, and grievance management, and ensures that they comply with NEMT coverage requirements.

As a broker, your job is to help OHP members get to health appointments. By providing rides, you will also help them pay for travel expenses. In order to become an NEMT broker, you must have experience in the field and a passion for helping people. Once you complete your training and gain experience, you’ll be able to take on this challenging profession with ease.

The Department of Health Care Policy & Financing has expanded its contract with IntelliRide last July, which will help manage the referral process, scheduling, and claims submission for NEMT services. This decision caused some local community transportation providers to express their concerns about the new statewide approach. As a result, the Department of Health Care Policy & Financy reviewed feedback and restored a relationship with local community transportation providers for members who live outside of IntelliRide’s nine-county service area.
